On Watermarking MP3 Files

Started a new freelance development job this week at 3Form. First task is to spec and build an MP3 download site. The spec itself is not too bad so far, but one of the most interesting little pieces of this puzzle is the process fo watermarking MP3s so the user who initially downloaded the file from the site can be identified and wrist-slapped if they appear anywhere else. It’s not that the process is a difficult one - it is, and there is more  than [http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigmm/MM2001/ep/koukopoulos/]  one [http://www.fxpal.com/people/foote/papers/watermark.pdf]  way [http://www.kmutt.ac.th/itc2002/CD/pdf/17_07_45/WA2_PI/7.pdf]  to [http://www.pan.com/piracy/]  do [http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/120]  it [http://csdl.computer.org/comp/proceedings/itcc/2001/1062/00/10620237abs.htm]   too [http://amath.kaist.ac.kr/research/paper/01-11.pdf] - but that because the MP3 file format is an open one, it is equally possible to un-watermark a download if you look hard enough. Perhaps the placebo mark is the best one here rather than switching to WMA. I’ll tell the downloaders that files are marked and see if people can figure out that they aren’t.
