Good films, good music
Monday was a good day (tm). A Mighty Wind [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310281/] finally showed up in the UK cinemas this week, three months after the film came out in the states and the cast did a promotional concert tour no less. It’s great to see Harry Shearer [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0790434/] back in the cast - I missed him in Waiting For Guffman [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118111/] and Best In Show [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0218839/]. Bob Balaban [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000837/] pretty much steals the show I think but fans of Spinal Tap [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088258/] and Chris Guest [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001302/]’s impro-films are the ultimate winners. One of the songs has even been nominated for an Oscar. Fingers crossed on the 29th.
Also caught A Perfect Circle [http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=A%20Perfect%20Circle&tag=hmobiuscom-21&index=music&linkCode=ur2&camp=1634&creative=6738] live at the Birmingham Academy. The line-up has changed somewhat since they were last over here but their particular brand of space rock is just phenomenal. Maynard [http://www.maynardjameskeenan.com] was just as enigmatic as ever even if he did say a few more words than he would at a Tool [http://www.toolband.com/index_frames.html] gig but Billy Howerdel remains the man at the heart of APC, a six foot nosferatu dressed in black commanding our attention with his guitar lines and general presence. With James Iha on second guitar and Melissa Auf Der Maur playing support in her new band, it was almost a Smashing Pumpkins reunion too. Auf Der Maur [http://www.aufdermaur.com], as the band is called, don’t sound a million miles away from their old group either.Posted on February 4, 2004 #Nothing in Particular
